Choosing the Right Contact Lenses

Which Contact Lens Is Right For You?

Here at Eye Site Vision Center, your optometrist in Boca Raton, we provide expert exams and fittings for contact lenses. Most people can wear contacts, and we provide specialized fitting for hard to fit contacts as well as traditional ones. There are actually many different types of contact lenses on the market these days.

Types and Purposes of Contact Lenses

Modern contacts come in a number of types. The commonly available ones are:

  • Rigid gas permeable
  • Soft disposable
  • Extended wear
  • Hybrid
  • Toric
  • Multifocal
  • Colored

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are sometimes used for patients who have hard to fit conditions such as astigmatism or keratoconus. Hybrid contacts, which have RGP centers and soft rims, can be used to treat these conditions as well. Specialized toric lenses are a soft lens option for patients with astigmatism.

Soft lenses conform to the eye and thus are more comfortable for many people. They come in multiple varieties designed to be worn for anywhere from one day to months. Continuous or extended wear options do not have to be taken out at night. Some types of soft lenses are specially made for people with conditions such as chronic dry eye, or those who need multifocal (sometimes called bifocal) lenses. Colored contacts are available for cosmetic adjustments.

What is a Contact Lens Exam from Eye Site Vision Center Like?

Here at Eye Site Vision Center, your optometrist in Boca Raton, Lighthouse Point, and Coral Springs, we fit contacts for people with simple near- or farsightedness as well as hard to fit lenses. A contact lens exam is a lot like a general vision exam in that it starts with an evaluation of your overall visual health. After this overview, the eye doctor will use special equipment to measure the curvature of your eye and the size of your pupil. Computerized light machines and microscopes are used to measure your eye. After this, your eye doctor will test you for dry eye using a tear strip under your lower lid or a special dye.
