Most eye diseases do not cause symptoms until they have progressed to an advanced stage. Since the loss of vision occurs so gradually, many people adjust to vision impairment without realizing they are suffering vision problems. For example, if you have mild astigmatism, nearsightedness or farsightedness, you may start squinting without being aware of it to help you see. Older adults with macular degeneration might realize they can't see as well as they used to see but attribute it to aging and fail to seek treatment from their optometrist in Boca Raton. For these reasons and many others, your eye doctor strongly urges you to get a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year.
Vision exams detect possible vision issues. Vision screenings are not meant to diagnose eye diseases but can lead to a diagnosis of a particular eye disease, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or cataracts. During a vision exam, you will undergo visual acuity testing using alphabet eye charts and phoropters, or machines displaying a series of lenses to determine if eyesight can be corrected or improved. In addition, your optometrist in Boca Raton will test your vision field by asking you if you see a flash of light at your periphery. Confrontation field tests involve your eye doctor flashing several fingers in different areas of your visual field and asking you how many fingers you see.
Eye health evaluations are designed to assess components of your eyes, such as the pupil, iris, retina, optic nerve and sclera. Your eye doctor will perform a fundus (dilated) exam to view structures inside your eye as well as the condition of ocular blood vessels. If you are over 35, you will have your eye fluid pressure checked as well. Higher than normal intraocular pressure may indicate glaucoma. Additionally, some systemic diseases can be detected through eye health exams, such as diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases and even heart problems.
